Sisterhood News

Book Club

Wednesday, November 9, 7 p.m.
Rabbi Jared Saks will lead a discussion on the book The Bread Givers, by Anzin Yesierska. First published in 1925, this masterpiece of American immigrant literature is set in the 1920s on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and tells the story of Sara Smolinsky, the youngest daughter of an Orthodox rabbi who rebels against her father's rigid conception of Jewish womanhood. This discussion is open to the entire congregation. Please RSVP to Maia Aarsheim at 612-821-1542.

Membership Appreciation Event

Monday, November 7, 6 p.m.
RSVP by November 1

Crak! Bam! Dot! Is the sound of these Mah Jongg words music to your ears or are you unable to tell the difference between a wind and a dragon? Have you ever wondered how this centuries-old Chinese game made its way into Jewish homes? Then bring your friends to an unforgettable Sisterhood Membership

Appreciation Night featuring Bari Pearlman, director of the film Mah Jongg: The Tiles That Bind. Bari will discuss her award-winning documentary, which examines Asian and Jewish experiences in playing this game that transcends time and culture. After dinner we’ll watch her film (32 minutes in length) and have the opportunity to ask Bari questions about her movie-making experience.

Tickets are $15 for Sisterhood members and $18 for non-members--or become a Sisterhood member for $50 and enjoy the evening on us. Please send your check (made payable to Temple Israel Sisterhood) by November 1 to Christine Levin, 2841 Tanagers Lane, Excelsior, MN 55331.

Further questions? Please call Christine at 952-470-8148.

Dinner and a movie with all your sisters! What could be better?

Bimah Presenters Needed!  No Experience Necessary!

Sisterhood is proud to present each Bar/Bat Mitzvah child with a lovely gift in honor of this special occasion in their lives. The gift has changed over the years and currently it is a beautiful Kiddush Cup. A sisterhood member presents the gift to each child at the Shabbat evening service of their B'nai Mitzvah weekend. It is even more special when a B'nai Mitzvah family member or friend is the Sisterhood presenter! Anyone who is a current Sisterhood member can be a presenter! We will provide several brief scripts to choose from or you may make up your own. If you would like to be the presenter to a friend or family member's child having a Bar or Bat Mitzvah, please leave a message on the Sisterhood Hotline 612-377-6700 ext. 501 or contact Arlene Leibovich.
