Manny Gabler was raised in Shanghai, China, as a Jewish refugee. He joins us this Shabbat to share his story. From 1937 to 1941 the open port of Shanghai, China, allowed more than 20,000 stateless Jews seeking refuge from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia to temporarily settle in the Hongkou area of the city. There, starting in 1943, Jewish refugees were required to live in a one square mile unwalled ghetto. Manfred “Manny” Sigmund Gabler was only a year old when his parents arrived in the city on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. Gabler joins us to recount growing up in Shanghai, his experience of the war as a child, and his family’s journey to the United States.
