The first Seder is Saturday evening, April 12.

The holiday of Pesach, or Passover, falls on the Hebrew calendar dates of Nissan 15-21. This year, Passover begins before sundown on Saturday, April 12, 2025, with the first Seder, and ends after nightfall on Saturday, April 19, 2025.

Passover is one of the three major pilgrimage festivals and commemorates the Israelites’ Exodus from Egypt, and their transition from slavery to freedom.

Manny Gabler was raised in Shanghai, China, as a Jewish refugee. He joins us this Shabbat to share his story. From 1937 to 1941 the open port of Shanghai, China, allowed more than 20,000 stateless Jews seeking refuge from Nazi Germany and Soviet Russia to temporarily settle in the Hongkou area of the city. There, starting in 1943, Jewish refugees were required to live in a one square mile unwalled ghetto. Manfred “Manny” Sigmund Gabler was only a year old when his parents arrived in the city on the eve of the outbreak of World War II. Gabler joins us to recount growing up in Shanghai, his experience of the war as a child, and his family’s journey to the United States.

Lag BaOmer

Lag BaOmer is a minor, festive holiday that falls on the 33rd day of the seven-week period between Passover and Shavuot, a period of time known as the Omer. The Omer has both agricultural and spiritual significance: it marks both the spring cycle of planting and harvest, and the Israelites’ journey out of slavery in Egypt (Passover) and toward receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai (Shavuot).
